Joachim Rønning on Instagram: “Here’s a throwback to one of my favorite set pieces in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. We had slotted two days in the schedule for shooting a scene where Jack and Barbossa meet up in order to continue their journey together in the third act. But two weeks before we were supposed to shoot it, we still didn’t have a solve. I remember late night conferences with writer Jeff Nathanson, producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Chad Oman and Disney’s Sean Bailey and Sam Dickerman, figuring it out – and at the same time being in the middle of principal photography(!). Jeff constructed a hilarious wedding scene but then the problem was that we had nowhere to shoot it and little time to build anything. Production designer, Nigel Phelps, came to the rescue with the idea of the wedding taking place inside a washed up whale carcass – a simple set that could be built in time. Add Johnny’s genius ad-libbing and we had ourselves a scene. One of my favorites in the movies ☠️☠️☠️ #tbt #potc #moviemagic”

Joachim Rønning on Instagram: “One of the most fascinating aspects of shooting a movie is that you, almost on a daily basis, do things you’ve never done before. Like with the end scene in Pirates 5 where I had all five of the leading roles hanging on an anchor chain – having to interact with each other and the elements – and at the same time concluding the emotional core of the entire movie – while fighting off the villain. Heavy performances in an 100% CG environment – and so many story beats my head was spinning – made it very demanding on everyone. It took two years from when we shot the scene to when it was completed. Watching it all come together with the help of editing, sound, VFX and music was one of the most rewarding processes of my career 🎥☠️🖤#piratesofthecaribbean #pirates5 @disneypirates #tbt 1: The chain gang. Actors on a string. 2: One of my many diagrams for the scene.3: My previs storyboard.4: Concept art.5: Johnny wet-down.6: Me.7: A stunt scene that will last about a second in the finished movie.8: Geoffrey and the gang riding the anchor.9: Javier commanding his ghost army.10: Love these screen grabs of Kaya and Geoffrey from the finished movie.”
